The Discoghosts – “Straight But Gayish”

the discoghosts – “straight but gayish” (download)

The main goal of The Discoghosts is to impress girls.  They make no attempt to hide that.  “Straight But Gayish” (from Ego Twister‘s awesome Party Ruiners, Vol 2 comp) is a silly, tongue-in-cheek slippery disco dance track.  Its sole purpose is to get you dancing and possibly singing along.  Nothing more, nothing less.   You might love it, you might hate it, but chances are you’ll tap your feet along to it at least for a second or two.

From their debut 7″, which was released by Captured Tracks back in January.  Vancouver, BC duo Cosmetics approached French producer Premier Rang (Italians Do It Better) to do a remix, and they ended up collaborating on the remix together.  Highly recommended if you like Adult, Medio Mutante, etc.

Special Request – “Salsa Smurph”

special request – “salsa smurph” (download)

This song has nothing to do with salsa or Smurfs.  There’s actually not much info floating around about Special Request.  This was a vocoder-heavy electronic track that was released by Tommy Boy in 1983.  It’s synthy and funky, so naturally I like it.

Lindstrom & Christabelle – “Lovesick”

lindstrom & christabelle – “lovesick” (download)

Great collaboration between Norwegian producer Lindstrom, and vocalist Christabelle.  They met after Christabelle‘s brother, a friend of Lindstrom, played her some of his music.  She fell in love with it and recorded some of her own vocals over the otherwise instrumental songs, and her brother got these songs back to Lindstrom.  They hit it off and ended up recording the full length LP Real Life Is No Cool, which was released last year. You can catch Bear In Heaven performing a cover of this song live at some shows on their recent tour.

Chali 2na – “Gadget Go Go” (prod. by Rusko)

chali 2na – “gadget go go” (download)

Honestly, I haven’t really thought about Chali 2na in years.  I used to bump Jurassic 5‘s debut EP fairly frequently, and it still stands up, but the past 5+ years, I haven’t really heard much from that entire camp that I’ve liked.  Although, Chali was probably my favorite rapper in the group back in the day.  He recently released his Fish Market Part 2 LP a couple of months ago, and this track is by far the standout track on the record.  “Gadget Go Go” was produced by dubstep producer Rusko, and Chali sticks to the beat like white on rice.  Have a listen, and you’ll see what I mean.

copy – “breakfast” (download)

Copy (Portland, Oregon’s Marius Libman) is back with a new record called Hard Dream on Audio Dregs (Ratatat, E*Vax, Atole, etc).  The record is chock-full of instrumental synth-heavy, electro-tinged, 8-bit goodness, and you should definitely pick it up when it drops on September 21.

friends of the maid – “carolina called” (download)

Another great gem from the Crispy Nuggets blog.  Not a lot is known about Friends of the Maid other than that they were from Minneapolis and released this great little self-titled EP on Rong Rung Records in 1984.  A must for fans of Talking Heads, and all around upbeat mid-80′s synth pop.

pete shelley – “homosapien” (download)

Pete Shelley was best known as lead singer for the Buzzcocks, but he also had a solo career as well.  His solo work was more rooted in electronic music, and his debut album Sky Yen featured some of his electronic experimentations, and has been loosely compared to some Krautrock music.  “Homosapien” was his first solo “single,” which he released in 1981.  The single was banned by the BBC for its references to gay sex.

beat connection – “in the water” (download)

Seattle’s Beat Connection released their Surf Noir EP last month.  The EP is 8 tracks of summery lo-fi pop songs and dare-I-say is borderline “chillwave-esque.” This thing has really grown on me these past few weeks.  It’s perfect for a sunny summer day, which we’re finally starting to get out here in the Bay Area.  I guess the timing is right. You can download the EP for FREE right here.

sleigh bells – “kids” (download)

Brooklyn duo Sleigh Bells has been pretty “buzzy” lately.  Rightfully so.  Their Treats LP is full of abrasive beats, electric guitar and female vocals.  Not for everyone, but if you do like this stuff, listen to it LOUD and piss off your neighbors.

C.I.A. – “Jus 4 The Cash”

c.i.a. – “jus 4 the cash” (download)

Around the same time he was recording NWA And the Posse with NWA, Ice Cube recorded this EP with the C.I.A. (Cru’ In Action).  C.I.A. featured the legendary Dr. Dre on production, and vocal duties were split between Ice Cube, K-Dee & Sir Jinx. I haven’t been able to track down a better quality version of this track yet, so this muddy vinyl rip will have to do.

Alabama’s PRGz (Paper Route Gangstaz) recently teamed up with Diplo for this southern rap club banger  from their new EP Rocket Fuel.  Unfortunately, the rest of the songs on this EP don’t really stand up to this one.  Their upcoming debut album is supposedly has Diplo as executive producer, so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on these guys.  The whole EP is available right here if you’re interested.

john stewart – “gold” (download)

This one is a bit different than the usual stuff I post on here, but I really love this album and had to share this song.  I grew up listening to it a lot with my dad, and it recently resurfaced when my dad asked for a mix cd with this on it.  John Stewart (NOT the host of the Daily Show), is best known for writing The Monkees“Daydream Believer.” He released this album, Bombs Away Dream Babies, in 1979.  This track in particular is especially catchy, and features some recognizable background vocals from Stevie NicksLindsay Buckingham also appears on this record.  Unfortunately, I think it’s out of print, so I can’t provide a link to buy it.

Classic track from Ohio legends Zapp & Roger.  Roger Troutman was so synonymous with the vocoder that his nephew Rufus Troutman III did a vocoder rendition of “Amazing Grace” at Roger’s funeral in 1999.  Oh, and he sang the chorus on 2pac & Dr. Dre‘s “California Love.” Nuff said.

The Big Pink are a duo from London.  They mix live guitars with sampled drums, drum machines and glitchy synth sounds.  They’ve supported Muse, TV On the Radio and more, and one of the guys in the band runs a small label called Merok, which has released music by Crystal Castles and Klaxons.  Their full-length record A Brief History of Love came out last year, and it’s great.

tonetta – “my bro” (download)

Very little factual information is known of Tonetta. Two years ago he started posting videos on youtube of himself in various states of undress / cross dress. He is thought to be in his 60′s and to live in canada. He has been recording these songs since the early 80′s although has never performed live. This music is incredibly fascinating to me, to say the least.

chocolate watch band – “it’s all over now, baby blue” (download)

Chocolate Watch Band‘s The Inner Mystique has been getting some heavy rotation around these parts lately.  Top to bottom this record is great.  These guys were from San Jose, CA and primarly active in the late ’60′s.  They had many disputes with their manager, Ed Cobb, because Ed ended up hiring session musicians to record half this album without telling the band.  From what I’ve heard, the band recorded their parts for the record and didn’t know that other people were brought into the studio until they received their finished copy of the album.  “Its All Over Now, Baby Blue” is a Bob Dylan cover, and it sounds like it was sung by Mick Jagger.
